I have always been interested in sacred space. Aided by a balance of light, architecture and rhythm of lines, I strive to make a room which will be felt as safe and harmonic, and which will give the visitor time for peaceful contemplation.
As a 14 year old I came to realize all the evils caused by religion in this world and decided to leave the Church of Sweden. Now, more than 20 years later, I am designing and constructing the ICEHOTEL church. I engage in this mission with a deep sense of veneration and respectfulness. Also, I am grateful for the encounters and philosophical conversations I have experienced in the process of my work.
In the entrance of the church we are welcomed by the Virgin, a warm female figure, secure and strong, at rest in her FAITH. I am certain that an enormous power dwells in faith, and that one of the paths to this power is through your god. Faith can move mountains.
Peace of mind is where the core of our being comes forth and when we are aware of this core, we have the ability to kindle the spark of HOPE. Without hope, we are unable to improve our world and our lives. The power to change things comes from within.
The first ice window in the hall depicts a classical representation of the Virgin and Child. The other, depicts Joseph and the Christ Child, which I have chosen as a symbol of LOVE.
