Suite 302
Desert Pinnacles

The idea for this suite is strongly inuenced by the Australian Outback Desert where people shelter from the harsh environment in a similar manner as at the ICEHOTEL.

An example of this is the opal mining township of Cooper Pedy where people live in underground shelters / homes to escape the extreme heat. ICEHOTEL is a shelter from extreme cold and an experience for visitors to live with pure ice. As the extreme Arctic winters and availability of pure ice have inuenced the design of the lcehotel, Cooper Pedy’s extreme heat and availability of mining equipment and sandstone have produced similar results. Both have created amazing ‘underground’ shelters that maintain constant temperatures.

The ice pinnacles and powder snow oor of this suite are symbolic of sandstone pinnacles protruding through shifting desert sands. The ribbed ice walls represent corrugated iron that is the most commonly used building material in the Australian Outback. The scooped snow walls represent patterns that have been sand blasted by desert winds just as the Arctic winds do in snow.

Victor Cebergs

Born in Australia. Victor’s sculptural works deal with public spaces and their indigenous histories. They are site speci€c and progress through constraints of placing aesthetic objects into the public arena. Indigenous ora and fauna are a frequent source of imagery. He enjoys working with raw materials and have had success combining cast aluminium, forged steel and Australian timbers. Victor’s works are large scale to interact between the public and the speci€c site. He has worked throughout Australia, in Japan, Germany, Sweden, Canada, New Zealand and Korea.
