Self-similarity

‘‘Self-similariy is a juxtaposition of processes ‘human easy, machine hard’ and ‘human hard, machine easy’.

Using custom made software the ice triangles are cut on a CNC machine and then assembled to the pattern. The triangular pattern against the wall is an aperiodic fractal tiling, in which all pieces are the same but their different rotation creates a varying pattern.

This pattern is selfsimilar, such as many patterns found in nature. Surrounding the bed is a 2D voronoi diagram, a cell pattern in which the same pressure occurs on all sides, such as a cross section of soap foam. This work deals with general self-similarity.

While both patterns are easy for machines and hard for humans the pattern on the snow walls is completely organic, made by hand and guided by empathy and emotion, a process typically best for human. The improvisation and spontaneity gives a richness that would not be improved by the exactness of a machine.’’

Thomas Wingate

Thomas is a self-taught architect, specialising in computational geometry and modeling of complex and organic buildings.
For the past 3-years he has worked for ALSOP in London, as a leading 3D specialist and custom software maker on ‘the 4th grace of Liverpool’ project.

Having worked on a lot of commercial projects of buildings containing many elements, Thomas was seeking a project with simpli€ed material in order to focus on the architecture and design of space. This brought him to work at ICEHOTEL.
