Cappadocia cave

Cappadocia Cave is a valley area in central Turkey, where 10 - 12 meter limestone stacks have been formed in the landscape by erosion. In these limestone pillars, sheltering places were carved by shepherds for themselves and their animals.

As ICEHOTEL forms a shelter from the extreme cold and windchill, these caves shelter from the extreme heat and sandstorms.

The enormity of the limestone stacks is represented with massive ice pillars, some of which reach through the snow roof to let in the arctic light.

Dave Ruane

Originally from Ireland, Dave was drawn to the far north of Sweden by the magic of the arctic climate.
‘The perfect winterness of it and something I could only dream about when I was growing up in the nearly snowless Irish winters.... To use the products of the winter (ice and snow) to experiment, create and play with ones imagination is a rewarding privelge.’
Dave has completed a masters in product design and has worked on the building team of ICEHOTEL for the past four years. In 2004 he made an ICEHOTEL suite in conjunction with Danish furniture company Friz Hansen.
