ICEHOTEL Art & Design Group

River Gallery

This year’s gallery is dedicated to the Torne River as the source of our work and our art and also our home. Each of the eight members of the Art & Design Group has created a work of art with the Torne River as the starting point for the concept. In the execution of the work, the artists focus on the unique properties of frozen water as a material for creating art.

Arne Bergh
Arne Bergh graduated from Konstfack, University College of Arts, Crafts & Design in Stockholm in 1980. With wood as his working material he has made sculptural works for exhibitions and was commissioned to carry out work for The Vasa Museum in 1990 and the Swedish Pavilion in World Expo, Seville 1992. He is also represented in schools and hospitals in Sweden.

In the 90’s Arne began focusing on Land Art, perhaps as a preparation for ICEHOTEL. During the following winters he came to ICEHOTEL together with Åke Larsson to sculpt, experiment, make new tools and try to find the limits of what these were able to do. “It was like a love affair with the ice and with winter”. Arne has worked full time at ICEHOTEL since 1996, he is currently the Artistic Director.

Mark Szulgit

Mark Szulgit was born in New York in 1970. Working as an Architect in Stockholm, Mark made a split second decision (literally) the 26th of January 1997 to work at the ICEHOTEL after reading a newspaper article. Mark is currently working at ICEHOTEL as Artist Coordinator and project manager for ICEBAR International.
Prior to moving to Sweden, Mark studied and worked in Tucson, Arizona specializing in functional desert architecture. He now lives in Poikkijärvi, near Jukkasjärvi, with his wife Julia. Occasionally he illustrates books.

Janne Haglöf

Janne Haglöf is originally from Falun in the middle region of Sweden.
He completed his arts training at Sunderby Folkhögskola and has worked for ten years as a set designer at film and theatre productions in Värmland and Kiruna. Janne first came to ICEHOTEL in 1997, with the aspiration to learn ice and snow construction techniques that could be used in his set design for films. Today, seven years later, he is still at ICEHOTEL, working as lighting designer, electrician and sculptor.
