Ice Church
The ICE CHURCH is built up and melted down in a
cyclical movement of change. This year’s ICE CHURCH is
a round church displaying a large dome and a side entrance
with apses. Five ice pillars carry the dome and allows for
light to enter through the roof vault.

The theme of the church is creation through vegetation
in the Weave of Life, the Tree of Life and Omfalos; the
the center of the world and its navel. Here one finds
the wild and the constructed, nature and culture,
light and obscurity, the transparent and the hidden.
Inside the church is a dome room for mutual ceremony and
private seclusion.

Lena Kriström

Lena Kriström Kulin, born in 1953, is a sculptor based in Uppsala. Lena works in stone and makes drawings. While living in Sweden she also spends time in southern France and Italy. Each winter since 1993 she has returned to ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjärvi to sculpt in ice and snow. She explores the refraction of light in the different angles
of the ice. Her work is mostly figurative with almost naturalistic motifs against more abstract shapes.

In previous winters Lena has collaborated with her husband PeO, creating among other things ice suites and an entrance sculpture in ice. This will be the ninth winter that she supervises the class “ice projects” (10 credits) offered to aspiring landscape architects at SLU, Uppsala. The students are working on an assignment to design the
immediate surroundings of ICEHOTEL.

PeO Kulin

PeO Kulin, born in 1948, gained his training in architecture in Stockholm between the years of 1967-73. He has been active as an architect in Uppsala since 1975. Through the Jernbron Architect Firm in Uppsala, which he has been running since 1989, he has been involved in designing housing projects, school extensions and
office complexes, amongst other things. Peo devotes a
lots of time to restoring his house in southern of France.

PeO Kulin has contributed to ICEHOTEL in 2002-03 by designing an entrance sculpture, and in 2003-04 by designing an ice suite. Both assignments were carried out in collaboration with his wife Lena.

Ragnhild Brodow

Ragnhild Brodow was born in 1955 and lives in Uppsala. She is a sculptor who prefers working with materials that can be shaped from the outside, like stone and snow. Ragnhild likes unexpected meetings, for example when the constructed meets organic form. She takes pleasure in creating entire sculptural room structures. Often she will create a room with some kind of seating. Ragnhild Brodow draws inspiration from her travels and from collaborating with other artists. She has held exhibitions in Sweden, England, Holland, Japan and China.

Inge Sandelius

Inge Sandelius was born in 1956 and lives in Uppsala. He is a musician, piano technician and woodworker. He finds the combination of frequencies, sounds and carpentry stimulating. Ideally, he constructs his own instrument designed with a beautiful intarsia.

Ragnhild and Inge have previously created two suites at ICEHOTEL on the themes of Frequencies and Kosmos. Inge built a grand piano of ice for the ICEHOTEL Millennium Celebrations. Ragnhild has participated in the international snow sculpting competitions in Kiruna on several occasions.
