Sauna like a local
Get into the steaming warmth and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere. When the heat gets too intense it’s time for a cooling dip in the Torne River, which is cut open for ice bathing during winter season. In Jukkasjärvi you can enjoy the Cultural Sauna, the heart of the Swedish Sauna Academy.
In Swedish Lapland, winter stretches from the beginning of October until the end of April. With temperatures well below -30°C (-22°F), it is no surprise that the sauna is seen as one of the most important parts of the home. This is a place for peacefulness and relaxation. In Swedish Lapland, the sauna is regarded as an almost sacred place where everyone gets together – in the sauna everyone’s equal. In addition, the proximity of nature is considered to have healing properties on body and mind.
“If it isn’t healed with sauna, spirit or tar, death isn’t far” is an old Finnish saying. With this in mind, the sauna bath starts with deep cleansing using tar soap. The experience is continued with a relaxing moment in the classic wood-fired sauna. When you’re had as much heat as you could bear, it’s time to cool off with a refreshing dip in the river. During winter season a hole is cut open in the Torne River for ice bathing. Winter bathing is said to help the body to better handle the cold and is a sort of vascular gymnastic which is good for the heart.
To further enhance the purifying effect of the sauna bath, entirely natural handmade spa products is provided. Massage your body with sweet-scented blueberry soap and wash your hair with lingonberry shampoo made out of berries picked in the local Torne Valley.
The Culture Sauna is located in close connection to the enriching Old Homestead with roots dating back to 1768. This was the birth place of the Swedish Sauna Academy. Its mission is to spread the word about the history, traditions and the importance of the sauna. The motto of the Swedish Sauna Academy is “In Sauna Veritas – In sauna there is the truth”.
Enjoy with your beloved, friends or colleagues
The Culture Sauna is open year round and the experience is tailored by season. The Jukkas Ritual is a sauna experience in ten steps and takes about three hours. There is always a sauna host around to guide you through the steps or answer your questions.
