Fly me to the aurora – the space adventure returns as the northern lights intensify

With exceptionally good forecasts of northern lights for the winter season of 2013, ICEHOTEL re-launches the Northern Light Flight packages – one of the latest and most unusual ways to experience the Aurora Borealis. This state-of-the-art experience is the result of a unique collaboration between ICEHOTEL, Spaceport Sweden, Lapland Resorts, Swedavia Kiruna Airport and the Institute of Space Physics.

The flights, this winter operated by Direktflyg, take passengers up in the winter night skies of Swedish Lapland and offer the opportunity to learn more about and experience the magical northern lights from above. Last winter season, ICEHOTEL was proud to be part of the world premiere of the Northern Light Flights, Spaceport Sweden’s first space adventure. The continued offering is part of a range of northern lights oriented experiences at ICEHOTEL and Sales & Marketing Director Dan Björk predicts an exciting season ahead for their guests:

-  We are very excited to offer these unique Northern Lights Flights and giving our guests even better chances of catching the Aurora Borealis, says Björk.

The Kiruna region is situated within the aurora zone and has among the best prerequisites in the world to see the northern lights, the basis for Kiruna’s extensive space heritage with over 60 years’ experience of space physics research. Working together with the world leading Institute of Space Physics, clients will be given the opportunity to both experience and learn more about the magical space phenomena of the northern lights and through collaboration with Direktflyg, the capacity is increased to 12 window seats.

-   The conditions for aurora are excellent this season. We are very excited to be able, in cooperation with our partners, to offer our northern light flights with increased capacity meeting the great demand for this unique space adventure, says Karin Nilsdotter, CEO of Spaceport Sweden.

The solar activity, which creates the northern lights, peaks every 11 years, so the aurora borealis tends to be more frequent and intense at these times. Additionally, the years following a peak see increased northern lights activity - this winter we are reaching the peak and the next two winters are expected to be very active and exciting.
