ICEHOTEL name-dropping list 2011

The dropping of the temperature to several degrees below zero in Jukkasjärvi marks the start of an ephemeral art endeavour. Using only frozen water from the Torne River, forty artists from all over the world gather in this small Swedish village, 200 km north of the Arctic Circle, to create an exclusive art exhibition: ICEHOTEL.

- The encounter with ICEHOTEL is an encounter with original art. Twenty different projects shall form a unity and out of this springs an enormous creative zest and power, that’s why it’s always as exciting to select and present those that will get to create the Art suites, says Arne Bergh, Artistic director at ICEHOTEL.

Half of the chosen artists have previously designed and built an Art suite of ice and snow. They will not only be responsible for their own projects, but also guide those that have worked in different art fields but never with the crystal clear Torne River ice.

This year’s artists come from 15 countries, among others: Argentina, Estonia, Spain, Italy, Norway and The Netherlands. They will arrive in Jukkasjärvi in two turns/teams. The first team will build from 6th until 24th November and the second team between 20th November until 8th December.

In total 47 rooms

In ICEHOTEL #22 there will be 1 Deluxe suite, 16 Art suites, 20 ice rooms, 8 snow rooms and 2 group rooms. There will be 47 rooms in total during the winter season of 2011/2012.

ICEHOTEL is the world’s first hotel built entirely of ice and snow. It is also the world’s largest: 5500 square meters large and built of 21500 tonnes of snice (a mixture of snow and Torne River ice) and 900 tonnes of ice. ICEHOTEL being designed by artists means that the creations are protected by the Swedish copywrite law, this is also what differentiates ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjärvi from copycats around the world.
