- The encounter with ICEHOTEL is an encounter with original art. Twenty different projects shall form a unity and out of this springs an enormous creative zest and power, that’s why it’s always as exciting to select and present those that will get to create the Art suites, says Arne Bergh, Artistic director at ICEHOTEL.
Half of the chosen artists have previously designed and built an Art suite of ice and snow. They will not only be responsible for their own projects, but also guide those that have worked in different art fields but never with the crystal clear Torne River ice.
This year’s artists come from 15 countries, among others: Greece, Lithuania, Argentina, Mongolia, USA and Japan. They will arrive in Jukkasjärvi in two turns/teams. The first team will build from 23rd November until 11th December and the second team, from 1st December until 19th December.
In total 65 rooms
In ICEHOTEL #23 there will be 1 Deluxe suite, 16 Art suites, 28 ice rooms, 9 snow rooms and 2 group rooms. New for this winter is 10 Northern Light suites. There will be 65 rooms in total during the winter season of 2011/2012.
ICEHOTEL is the world’s first hotel built entirely of ice and snow. It is also the world’s largest: 5500 square meters large and built of 21500 tons of snice (a mixture of snow and Torne River ice) and 900 tons of ice. ICEHOTEL being designed by artists means that the creations are protected by the Swedish copywriters law it is also this that differentiates ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjärvi from copycats that have appeared in various places around the world.

To be able to create ICEHOTEL and ensuring its construction; provide support to the artists and setting the lights, the construction is done in several phases. As one section is completed, it opens to visitors and overnight guests, while the other sections are still under construction.
The first part of the hotel opens in the beginning of December, and from then, new rooms opens each week for the ICEHOTEL to be fully completed in the beginning of January. ICEBAR by ICEHOTEL opens in mid-December. The main hall and ice church are ready to open in time for Christmas.
If you are on location during the building phase you can gain a closer insight into the unique requirements that apply when building and creating art and architecture in snow and ice.
As we build ICEHOTEL under the open sky, using the natural materials of the winter season, our time plan and building progress depends on Mother Nature and therefore we ask you to make allowances for any deviations from the plan.
When completed, ICEHOTEL extends over an area of approximately 5000 square meters and has 65 rooms, a bar, reception and a main hall, and next to -a church made of ice and snow.
The designers and artists selected to design this year's luxury suites and public areas, are presented this autumn 2012
