- Our summer guests usually have a lot of questions about ICEHOTEL, wondering how it is to stay in suite made of ice and snow, says Yngve Bergqvist, founder of ICEHOTEL. We can now provide them with an answer by offering cold accommodation even during summer.
ICEHOTEL, the world’s first and largest hotel built of snow and ice, will have a little sister in the summer of 2011. On the 10th of June a smaller version of the hotel opens in the small village Jukkasjärvi, 200 km north of the Arctic cirle. In winter, the hotel is 5 500 square meters with 60 rooms; Art suites, Snow rooms and Ice rooms. This summer it will be 120 square meters and hold three art suites, an ABSOLUT ICEBAR and place for guests to try ice sculpting.
Construction has started
ICEHOTEL Production and The Art & Design group has already started to work on the project.
– We will build three different Art suites, each of them unique, just like in wintertime. Ice Chandelier Suite and the Main Hall Suite convey both what many people have experienced wintertime or seen in the media, says Sofie Ruotsalainen, designer and coordinator. The third suite, Arktikos 2, is the successor to Arktikos – an Art suite in the current ICEHOTEL, designed by artist AnnaSofia Mååg.
- In Artikos 2 guests will experience the true size of the polar bears at close hand and sleep with them under the star constellations Ursa Major and Ursa Minor – Great and Little Bear, AnnaSofia Mååg explains.
A little sister
ICEHOTEL’s little sister will be surrounded by several thousand tonnes of giant blocks of ice inside the Art Center, one of the storage halls in Jukkasjärvi where the indoor temperature is minus five degrees.
ICEHOTEL offers warm hotel rooms and chalets winter and summer and from June to September, and also a hostel, STF Jukkasjärvi. Guests at ICEHOTEL can choose to sleep in cold accommodation and one or several nights in warm accommodation, just like in the winter. But instead of including dog sledding, snowmobile tours and northern light safaris you can during summer go rafting, canoeing, hiking, hunting, fishing or choose between several midnight sun activities.
– It is wonderful to work on something completely new, something we have never done before, says Sofi Ruotsalainen. We have many guests who come here during summer and want to see and experience the feeling of ICEHOTEL. Now they can look forward to becoming the first guests at ICEHOTEL during summer.
