Important milestones

A lot has happened through out the years. We have done ice events with Hugo Boss in Berlin, GM in Geneva, a fashion show with Louis Vuitton in Paris, ice performance in 7 continents when Mont Blanc had their 100 year celebration and much, much more. In 2009 - we started selling tickets to space! The winter season 2009/2010, will be our 20th.

1989   Two Japanese sculptors lead a workshop in ice sculpting for
artists from Swedish Lapland. Ice was taken from the Torne River.
1990   Artic Hall, 60m2 art exhibition is built.
1992/93   The first ICEHOTEL is built with a bar, an ice chapel and a ice movie theatre.
1994   Photographer Herb Ritts shoots Absolut Versace in Jukkasjärvi with supermodels Naomi Campbell, Markus Schenkenberg and Kate Moss. The campaign was launched in Vogue on 1 April 1997.
1994/95   International break-through for ICEHOTEL. ABSOLUT ICEBAR sees the light of day.
1996   Billie August’s movie “Smilla’s Sense of Snow” was shot. The set
for the final scene was built in Jukkasjärvi - and blown up to pieces.

1998

   Ice event in the Sahara dessert, Niger. -5 degrees meets +35 degrees, even the camels got thirsty and started licking the Torne River ice. 
2000   The ice export picks up spped and ice bars, ice glasses and sculptures are sent, amongst others, to Israel and Singapore.
2002   Tetra Pak orders 140 igloos for their 50th anniversarey. They are built in Jukkasärvi.
2002   ABSOLUT ICEBAR STOCKHOLM opens in Nordic Sea Hotel, Stockholm. The first permanent ice bar outside Jukkasjärvi.

2003

   Ice Globe Theatre, a three year project, has its grand opening. It was a copy of Shakespears theatre The Globe in London. Hamlet was performed in the Sami language. 
2004   Discovery Channel shoots a documentary about ICEHOTEL that was shown in over 140 countries, and still is.
2006   A new production hall, also know as "Ice factory" is built in Jukkasjärvi, with room for over 5000 tonnes of ice.
2007   Ice is sent to Washington, to be displayed outside House of Sweden - the Swedish Embassy.
2008   ICEHOTEL is voted Sweden's best travel experience by international travel agents.
2009   ICEBAR by ICEHOTEL launches its first bar in Copenhagen.
