They will create ICEHOTEL #20

It was in 1996 that artists from around the world started visiting Jukkasjärvi in Swedish Lapland to help build ICEHOTEL. About five hundred artists have been there since then and in November this year another thirty nine will arrive to create art suites in ICEHOTEL, that celebrates its twentieth season this year.

The artists come from Australia, Bulgaria, Chile, England, Japan, Norway, Spain, Sweden and USA. Some have been here before, others not. Some have never before worked with snow and ice. It is a mix of men and women between thirty and seventy years of age, painters, multimedia designers, art directors and interior designers.

ICEHOTEL is often referred to as a fairytale world by its guests – a Narnia in Swedish Lapland. This describes this year’s art suites well. The artists speak of possibilities for the guests to be somebody else for a while, be unique and to discover a playful attitude to architecture.

“Both Dennis and I have been intrigued with the idea of using such ephemeral materials like ice and snow to materialize our crystalline dreamscape of a timeless metropolis that is neither past, present nor future.” Says award-winning fashion photographer and creative director Andre Landeros Michel about his and Dennis Rolland’s (one of New York’s most acknowledged interior designers) contribution, Gotham on Ice.

The suite’s ornaments are going to be created of soft snow, Byzantine mosaic technique in ice, melted forms and classic snow and ice sculpting.

The Art & Design Group (ADG) and the building of ICEHOTEL The ICEHOTEL Art & Design Group was founded in 2003. Every year since then they have been choosing between hundreds of applications to find design interesting enough for the ICEHOTEL. Over the past winter seasons this design has attracted some 60.000 visitors each year.

This year’s hotel will have sixty two rooms and between November and December more than eighty people will be building ICEHOTEL. Forty five of these eighty people work with sawing ice, building ice walls, molding corridors and construction leading. The hotel covers an area of 5.500 square meters.
