– It’s always an exciting but difficult task to decide whose going to design and build the Art Suites at ICEHOTEL, says Arne Bergh, Artistic Director at ICEHOTEL. We want to see unique projects but still see them interact and harmonize with each other.
Approximately fifty percent of the selected artists have previous experience in designing and building in ice and snow, and they will now partially act as mentors to the other artists that has worked in different art fields, but never in the cold Torne River materials.
This year’s artists come from, for example, Japan, Bulgaria, USA, UK, Italy, Russia and Sweden. The first group will arrive to Jukkasjärvi on the 23 of November and stay until the 10 of December. The second group is working between the 29 of November and 16 December.
Four stages
The ICEHOTEL is built in stages. Phase one, with 8 Ice rooms, 7 Art suites, 1 Deluxe Suite, 8 Snow rooms and ABSOLUT ICEBAR JUKKASJÄRVI will be open on the 10th of December. Phase two; The Reception, 10 Art Suites, 14 Ice Rooms and The Main Hall, which is mainly designed by the Art & Design group at ICEHOTEL, will open on the 17th of December. The complete hotel with also the Ice Church, 3 Art Suites, 6 Ice rooms and 3 Snow Rooms opens on the 23rd of December.
ICEHOTEL is the world's first hotel built entirely of ice and snow. It is also the largest one in the world – 5500 square meters built of 21 500 tonnes of “snis” (a mixture of snow and Torneälvsis) and 900 tonnes of ice. ICEHOTEL in Jukkasjärvi is designed by artists, and that is also one thing that makes it unique and differs it from copies that over the last years have appeared in various places in the world.
This year with 60 rooms
In total, there will be 21 Art Suites, (including a luxury suite), 28 Ice rooms and 11 Snow rooms (including three group rooms).
