ABSOLUT ICEBAR JUKKASJÄRVI in ICEHOTEL opens tonight, 200 km north of the Arctic Circle. The creative duo behind the large blue ice arch, ice pillars and litterally cool art inside its walls, are Jens Thoms Ivarsson and Mats Nilsson. Both are recurring ICEHOTEL artists.
The Nerve
The theme is based on the creative duo’s curiosity about the man and how she works, both mentally and physically. Thoms and Nilsson are fascinated about the human body’s physical reactions, neurotransmitters and electronic signals, the elements that makes us feel, think and act the way we do.
- We can actually control how we feel and that is what we have used as our starting-point, says Jens Thoms Ivarsson.
They want to get the guests at the bar to start thinking about what “gets them going”. And to achieve that, they let their art tell the story about their passion for music, form and design.
The new ABSOLUT ICEBAR JUKKASJÄRVI will therefore introduce you to ice and snow art inspired by music groups such as Steppenwolf, Clutch, Captain Beyond, Metallica and Red Hot Chili Peppers. Visitors can also take in the duo’s love for the Danish designer Poul Kjaerholm.
Meetings
The meeting between people has also been central to the whole creative process. Small but effective solutions challenge the human urge to socialize - in a playful way. The entrance to the bar, for example, is so narrow that guests will have to look into each other's eyes when passing it.
- There is a lot going on within us as well as in the meeting between people, says Thoms and Nilsson.
The two artists have also paid close attention to the needs of the staff, as well as the guests. The bar has to be a practical work space as well surprise and inspire its visitors.
- Ice walls and arches separate the dance floor from the ice armchairs, sofas and the bar. Those who want to, should be able to dance without disturbing guests that just want to sit down and relax, says Jens Thoms Ivarsson.
Now they look forward to the opening of the bar and the first guests arriving to ICEHOTEL, which is not only a hotel but also an recognized art exhibition, created by artists from around the world.
