ICEHOTEL and the Northern Lights in winter

A team of sled dogs awaits you at Kiruna Airport. The athletic huskies are eager to take off. Heading for Jukkasjärvi and ICEHOTEL you travel across frozen lakes and through snow-clad forests. The wilderness is silent and only the sound of your dogs’ breath and the runners against the snow can be heard.

Upon arrival at ICEHOTEL you are offered a guided tour of this unique hotel situated 200km north of the Arctic Circle. Each winter the hotel is built of 2000 tons of ice borrowed from the Torne River. In late spring the building material is returned, as the ice and snow melts down and flows back into the river.

Before enjoying dinner at award winning ICEHOTEL Restaurant, you can enjoy a traditional sauna. If the sky is clear chances are you will see a vision of colour and light dance across the sky. This is the Northern Lights, a magnificent phenomenon which is frequently experienced above the Arctic Circle. After a delicious dinner it is time to go to bed. Depending on your wishes, you will either spend the night in one of our cosy cabins or on the reindeer hides covering the bed in one of our spectacular ice rooms.

The next day offers a wide range of activities. You can venture into the wilderness by snowmobile, go on a snowshoe trek, try cross-country skiing or experience the way of life of the Sami people. In the nearby town of Kiruna the world’s largest underground mine is open for tourists and at ICEHOTEL professional ice-artists invite you to learn the art of ice sculpting.

In the evening guests gather in the spectacular ABSOLUT ICEBAR at ICEHOTEL to reflect on their experiences. Drinks are served in ice glasses! After a transfer to the airport the next morning it is time to say farewell to the magic world above the Arctic Circle.
