A journey on the Kaitum River

  • Fresh water is the new oil. Time to refuel! Fresh water is the new oil. Time to refuel! expand image
  • Our journey begins in the great lakes with huge trays of fresh water, in the upper part of Kaitum River, far up north in Swedish Lapland, A very exclusive and rare commodity. • Did you know that only 2% of all water on Earth is freshwater, of which about 1% is available to us humans. An even smaller proportion is fit for drinking. To sit in the dinghy, surrounded by billions of gallons of this luxury feels big. Did you know that only 2% of all water on Earth is freshwater, of which about 1% is available to us humans. • Fishing, filming and hanging out. Choosing one of the Swedish Lapland unspoiled rivers as site for this is perfect. The scenery changes every day, when we travel 120 km downstream, from the treeless mountains to the pine country, through fast-flowing rapids and over large lakes. Fishing, filming and hanging out. • All the signs speaks for us… Nowadays it is the journey I appreciate more than fishing. I realize that everyone who appears regularly in such unique environments has more than the actual fishing and paddling techniques to share with rest of the world. • We are camping overnight at the upper Kaitum lake, before we paddle along Tjirtjam. In addition to lots of big grayling, we get lots of big pike, 5-7 kgs. And then, even bigger pike, lurking in the depths, comes up and tries to take the bait off the hook. We are camping overnight at the upper Kaitum lake, before we paddle along Tjirtjam. • A magical evening and night with the trout is waiting. River bends, hollow since the Ice Age. Deep in the outer curve, shaped by the power of water for thousands of years, with vast backwater in the middle. Rapid tops, with large boulders just below the surface. That’s where the trout is waiting. A magical evening and night with the trout is waiting. River bends, hollow since the Ice Age. • Several similar days waiting, fishing is still incredible, although the average weight goes down. Campfires and great camping nights. Smoked fish snacks at night. • Globally, there are some crucial processes in order to continue life as we know it today: pollinating insects, photosynthesis, composting process, growing trees and the lifecycle of clean water. And I suddenly realise, that fishing combined with kayaking on a free-flowing river is an experience that gives a strong understanding of all these processes. An understanding of our fragile and beautifiul world. It is time to rethink… Globally, there are some crucial processes in order to continue life as we know it today: pollinating insects, photosynthesis, composting process, growing trees and the lifecycle of clean water.
