ICEHOTEL participated in Sapporo Snow Festival 2013

During the first half of February, the Art & Design team at ICEHOTEL went to Japan to participate in Sapporo Snow Festival. The result: Fourth place in the International Snow Sculpture Contest. We also got the Artist's Choice Award together with Finland.

Art Exhibition 2013

During the winter, visitors to ICEHOTEL have the chance discover the story about building ICEHOTEL, told through photographs by Anna Öhlund and light interpretation by John Pettersson. They have created the first "ski in ski out" photography and light exhibition in the world: ICEHOTEL – a warm story about a cold place.

ICEHOTEL is built in stages and the artists arrive group-wise at intervals. Now, during the final week before opening, all 50 are here. The building of snow and ice is bustling with activity and resembles an anthill. In the corridors, it is apparent that this is a building site.

Here, happily occupied artists and technicians, each of whom is responsible for his or her small piece of the big project, share the space among ladders, planks, extension cords, saws, lifting devices, wheelbarrows, shovels, sleds and other equipment.

ICEHOTEL #23 - Communal Areas

We can proudly present this year’s rendition of the communal areas of the hotel; The Main Hall, ICEBAR by ICEHOTEL Jukkasjärvi, The Ice Church, The Luxury Suite and The Reception.

New for this season is also a photo exhibition and light installation held in a separate building made from Torne River ice and snow with photography exhibition and light installation by Anna Öhlund and John Pettersson.

Change is what ties together all the twentythree versions of ICEHOTEL. Each adaption has borrowed and changed from previous editions. Still, memories of the earlier hotels can be found in the details of the present one.

Change is what inspires us. As crazy as it might seem - change, just like ICEHOTEL is forever.

We can all agree that what began as a humble igloo in 1989, has come a very long way.

Jens Thoms Ivarsson, Kalle Ekeroth and Christian Strömqvist, natives of Göteborg and recurring ICEHOTEL artists won 2nd price at the 63rd Sapporo Snow Festival, where 16 countries participated.
