A taste of this year’s ICEHOTEL

22 of August, 2016

A house of cards made from ice and snow, an exotic palace inspired by Casablanca, and a blooming cherry tree made to last the winter by the British brothers Hugh and Henry Miller. These are just a few of the ingenious creations guests will encounter at Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi this winter.

Amongst this year’s many amazing suites is an Art Deco-inspired suite designed by perennial Icehotel artists Luc Voisin and Mathieu Brison. For anyone who pines after the open sea in the heart of Swedish Lapland, our “Lapland Waves” suite by Luca Roncoroni will be the perfect place to settle down. In this suite the waves of the ocean have frozen to ice and the bed whimsically floats as if buoyed by the gentle caress of the ocean.

1 000 hand polished ice crystals and a sustainable ice experience year-round

Hand made from ice and snow in Jukkasjärvi, Icehotel is the world’s first and most magnificent ice hotel according to the UK’s Sunday Times, which ranked it amongst the most memorable hotel experiences in the world. The amount of snow used to create the hotel’s 55 rooms is equal to 700 million snowballs. No expenses are spared; for the chandeliers alone over 1000 hand polished ice crystals are made each year.

Building the hotel from scratch every year requires a huge amount of dedicated work that starts with harvesting 5,000 tons of ice from the Torne River in March. The ice is then stored until October when the building process starts. A few weeks before opening, about 40 artists from every corner of the world gather in Jukkasjärvi to create 35 unique suites from ice and snow. In addition to the guest suites, an ice chapel, Icebar, the main hall, and an ice gallery are created.

This winter season there is big news— a whole new ice experience to be enjoyed alongside our classic Icehotel experience. Icehotel 365 is a permanent structure that will include luxury suites, each with sauna and bathroom, and art suites, all sculptured by selected artists. As well as a large ice bar that serves champagne, and an ice gallery. This ice experience can be visited year-round and is cooled by solar panels during the summer months. Icehotel 365 opens November 2016.
