The Arctic summer is short and intense. The snow disappears fast when temperatures rise in May and before you know it the grass is green, Torne River runs free and trees and flowers color the landscape in vibrant summer hues. Birds and other wildlife return to the woodlands and the forest come to life. By the middle of August, the weather slowly cools off and summer is over as quickly as it came.
Summertime in Jukkasjärvi, 200 kilometers above the Arctic Circle, means 24-hour daylight. At this latitude, the sun never sets; the nights are as bright as the days between the middle of May and mid-July. The midnight sun invites you to stay up late and bathe in its golden rays. Feel the energy return in the magical light.
Experience the contrast between the lush greenery and mild temperatures outside, and the sub-zero winter world inside ICEHOTEL. Spend a night in one of the 20 art suites – nine of them comes with a warm private bathroom and relax. The hotel also holds an ice gallery and ICEBAR BY ICEHOTEL, all made from pristine Torne River ice, and waiting to be explored. Watch the free flowing Torne River through the arched window while standing amidst the same river in its frozen state.
ICEHOTEL is kept cool during the summer months thanks to the long days and bright nights. Solar panels harvest the energy from the midnight sun and help cool the permanent structure. Sustainability is important to us and we are constantly working on being more energy efficient. You can trust that the energy you use while charging your phone in your ice suite or in any of our warm spaces are green and clean!
Did you know that Jukkasjärvi was once a popular summer destination known for being one of the first places in Europe that offered river rafting? It was ICEHOTEL’s founder Yngve Bergqvist who started the trend in the 80’s. ICEHOTEL still offers river rafting tours on Torne River, which has the perfect mix of calm waters where you can enjoy the scenery and rapids that get your adrenaline going.
After establishing Jukkasjärvi as a summer destination, Yngve Bergqvist wanted to get guests to the village during winter. He went on an inspiration-trip to Japan where he came across artists that sculpted in ice and invited them to hold an ice sculpting-workshop in Jukkasjärvi. Shortly thereafter, a small igloo of snow was built to showcase the ice art and a group of people slept inside that igloo – by chance – and the idea to ICEHOTEL was born! Ice sculpting is the seed of what ICEHOTEL is today, and you can unleash your creativity on your own crystal-clear block of ice while watching the midnight sun light up the permanent ice experience.
