Solar Egg at Icehotel

The world-famous, mobile sauna 'Solar Egg' created by Bigert & Bergström for Riksbyggen is currently visiting Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi, due to the current situation the sauna is closed for booking, but still able to admire from the outside when in Jukkasjärvi.
Artist duo Bigert & Bergström created on behalf of Riksbyggen, a sculptural symbol that brings the thoughts to rebirth. This is because the city of Kiruna will go through a major change as the entire city is being relocated due to the extraction of iron ore which is currently taking place under the existing city center.

'Solar Egg' is made of gold-plated, stainless steel mirror plates and its faceted shape reflects the surroundings in a variety of mirror images. The interior is built of wood with wall panels and floorboards made of pine. The lighting inside the egg is powered by solar cells. The heart of the sauna itself consists of a wood-fired sauna heater designed as a human heart made of iron and stone. The temperature in the sauna is somewhere between 75 ° and 85 ° Celsius.

Since its birth in 2017, 'Solar Egg' has won numerous awards such as Red Dot Award, London International Awards, German Design Award, and Swedish Arts & Business Awards to name a few. So far, about 5,000 people have participated in this unique, golden sauna experience and after visiting remote places such as Paris, Copenhagen and most recently Minnesota, USA – this famous egg is now back to where it all began and can be visited at Icehotel in Jukkasjärvi between March 2 and May 15, 2020.
