“Moon Base Ferrum” – new playground of ice and snow in Kiruna
For the fifth consecutive year, ICEHOTEL, together with Tekniska verken in Kiruna, LKAB, PinPin Studio and students from Hjalmar Lundbohmskolan create the popular winter playground in the Ferrum Park in Kiruna. And what material is better to use than ice and snow when you create a playground 200 kilometers above the Arctic Circle?
In time for the Snow Festival, which opens Saturday, January 27, in Kiruna, a new winter playground will be finished in the Ferrum Park: ”Moon Base Ferrum”. Children and adults are invited to play amongst slides and labyrinths until the playground melts away under the spring sun in a few months.
– This year’s winter playground is inspired by the space and the playground itself is designed as a moon base. There are two slides, tunnels and labyrinths. One of the slides is 22 meters long and the other runs through a tunnel of snow. All of it created out of ice and snow, of course, says Karl-Johan Ekeroth, one of the designers from PinPin Studio who collaborates in creating the playground.
Karl-Johan Ekeroth has a Masters Degree in ”Child Culture Design”, Sweden’s only design education with a focus on the children’s’ perspective, play and child culture. He hopes that the winter playground will be a natural meeting place for children and adults.
Sharing the ice and snow knowledge
The winter playground is built together with a high school class from Hjalmar Lundbohmsskolan in Kiruna and before the work began on site, a workshop at ICEHOTEL was held, where everyone involved got to learn more about the craftsmanship behind the ice and snow.
Maria-Therése Edlert, Business Area Manager at ICEHOTEL Creative Experience, has also been taking part in the creative process.
– We export snow and ice experiences to the entire world, so it feels extra fun to be a part of creating something that every local can experience on-site in Kiruna. It is also very rewarding to be able to share our knowledge we’ve got after 28 years of creating in ice and snow. A huge part of our future workforce is in Kiruna and it makes the collaboration with the school Hjalmar Lundbohmsskolan really fun, says Maria-Therése.
Ice cold projects from Torne River are exported to the entire world
The concept ICEHOTEL Creative Experience was developed to help customers with ice experiences for all kinds of projects and events, like made-to-order ice bars, ice glasses and decorative blocks, as well as tailor-made ice sculptures, lectures and other services. Through the years, the Torne River ice has represented Sweden all over the world, from Chanel’s catwalk in Paris to Milano Design Week, Nobel Prize party and at ice bars across the globe.
