Art Suite Danger Thin Ice. Design Franziska Agrawal.
New art presented in the year-round open part of ICEHOTEL
Press Release October 4, 2017
It’s time to change sections of the art in the year-round open part of ICEHOTEL, for the first time ever. Invited to create art suites out of ice and snow are the artists Nina Hedman and Lena Kriström as well as designer Franziska Agrawal, amongst others.
The permanent part of ICEHOTEL is open year-round and just like the art in the seasonal hotel, the art suites are temporary. The material is borrowed from Torne River, created by select artists from all over the world and constantly changes since the character of the ice and snow keep transforming until it eventually melts, says Arne Bergh, creative director at ICEHOTEL.
Ten months have passed since the year-round part of the hotel opened and now it’s time to let three of the art suites melt back into Torne River. Three new art suites will be presented at ICEHOTEL during the month of October:
Deluxe Suite 34 meters
In the Deluxe suite ”34 meters” the architect and support manager for the artists at ICEHOTEL Luca Roncoroni together with Dave Ruane create multiple rooms in the room with help of several walls. They master this by building 34 meters of wall in one single art suite with 32 tons of ice and 5 tons of snow.
Art Suite Danger Thin Ice
The designer Franziska Agrawal from Germany creates the art suite ”Danger Thin Ice”. Visitors literally walk on thin ice in this frozen sea landscape and a bridge runs through the art suite and connects with the bed.
Deluxe Suite The Invisible (Invincible) Army
Artists Lena Kriström and Nina Hedman create the Deluxe suite ”The Invisible (Invincible) Army”, which consists of a female army with ten women. They are each made with unique expressions, but everyone got a purse. The artwork gets its inspiration from the Terracotta army in China, Hans Runesson’s picture ”The lady with the purse” and Monty Python’s women.
ICEHOTEL opened in 1989 and is not only a hotel but also an art exhibition with ever changing original art out of ice and snow. ICEHOTEL is created in a new guise every winter, completely made out of natural ice from Torne River, one of Sweden’s national rivers and last untouched waters. When the winter season’s hotel has melted back into the river in the spring, a part of the hotel still stands, a place where visitors can experience the ice and snow year-round. Welcome!
